The only museum in Poland, alongside the one in Gdańsk, documenting the history of post and telecommunications, in the historic Main Post Office building in Wrocław.
The Museum of Post and Telecommunications in Wrocław is, alongside the Museum of Polish Post in Gdańsk, the only institution in Poland collecting exhibits documenting the history of post, telecommunications and telegraphy in the Polish lands. It is housed in the historic building of the Wrocław Main Post Office at Zygmunta Krasińskiego street 1, in the Przedmieście Oławskie district.
The museum was founded on 25 January 1921 in Warsaw, where it operated until 1951. It was moved to Wrocław in 1956 and has operated there ever since. Between 1979 and 2003 the museum additionally had a branch in Gdańsk. Initially it was subordinate directly to the ministry, and from 1 January 1999, as a result of an administrative reform, it came under the management of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship self-government. Since 1988 the institution has been a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the International Association of Transport Museums (IATM).
The museum gathers interdisciplinary collections related to the history of Polish post. Among them are historical documents and postage stamps, postal vehicles and equipment, telegraph and telephone apparatus, radio and television equipment, post office signs and letterboxes, as well as uniforms, medals and seals. The institution shows five permanent exhibitions, dedicated to the history of the post, postboxes, horse-drawn postal vehicles, telegraph and telephone technology, and transmitting equipment.
The museum operates in the historic building of Wrocław's Main Post Office, which ties the exhibition to the place where it originated. The building stands in the very centre, close to the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice and the Museum of Architecture.
