A park in the centre of Wrocław, by the Wrocław Opera, laid out in the style of Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens, with a monument to Copernicus and a children's carousel.
Nicolaus Copernicus Park lies right in the centre of Wrocław, in the Old Town, in the area of the Old Town Promenade, on the inner side of the former town moat. It has borne its present name since 1993; before that it operated as Park Staromiejski (Old Town Park), Ogród Staromiejski (Old Town Garden), and, under communist rule, as Hanka Sawicka Park.
The establishment of the park here was inspired by the 19th-century Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. The name commemorating Nicolaus Copernicus was given to the park by a resolution of the Wrocław City Council of 9 October 1993, the same resolution that organised the naming of the city's parks and wooded areas.
To the east the park borders Wierzbowa street and the former Leipziger Palace building, just beyond which is a square with a monument to Nicolaus Copernicus. Its northern boundary is marked by Teatralna street and the former municipal bathhouse building standing on it. To the west the park is closed off by Teatralny square and Bożego Ciała street, near which stands the Wrocław Puppet Theatre. A little further, on Świdnicka street, you can see the monument to Bolesław the Brave.
A slow-moving carousel for children operates in the park. It only runs in good weather, however, so before visiting with young children it is worth bearing in mind that it may be closed on a rainy day.
The park borders directly on the Wrocław Opera and lies within walking distance of the Town Hall and the Market Square. It is also close from here to the National Forum of Music, making the park a convenient starting point for trips towards the city centre.
