The ruin of a medieval castle above Trzciniec in Bogatynia, captured by the Lusatian League of Six Towns in 1399.
Ronów Castle is a medieval stronghold standing on a hill north of Trzciniec, a district of Bogatynia, near the right bank of the Lusatian Neisse (Nysa Łużycka). It has been in ruins since the end of the 14th century.
The first written mention of the castle dates from 1262 and names the burgrave Konrad von Ronow. The fortification controlled the trade route of the time from Prague to Zgorzelec. At the end of the 14th century the castle became the seat of a robber knight, and in January 1399 it was captured by the forces of the Lusatian League of Six Towns after a successful siege. The stronghold was destroyed at that time and never rebuilt.
In the layout of the ruins, researchers distinguish an outer bailey adjoining from the south and the main castle, divided by a defensive wall into two parts. Sources do not state whether the site is open to visitors or in what condition the walls have survived, so it is worth checking this on site before setting out.
In Bogatynia it is also worth seeing the Turów Lignite Mine.
