A peat bog reserve near Twardogóra, protecting peat bogs with rare bryophytes and bog plants, accessible via an educational trail.
The "Torfowisko koło Grabowna" (Peat Bog near Grabowno) nature reserve protects a fragment of the forest complex between Grabowno Wielkie and Twardogóra, in Oleśnica County. On a small area of 4.22 hectares lie three small peat bogs, formed in ground depressions on impermeable clay soil.
The area was placed under protection in 1980, to preserve a peat bog with interesting vegetation and geology. The reserve lies outside the boundaries of other area-based forms of nature protection, and its territory is divided into two parts by an asphalt road.
89 species of vascular plants have been recorded within the reserve, including 4 protected ones, as well as 25 species of bryophytes, of which 10 are protected. Protected plants growing here include juniper clubmoss, lesser bladderwort, marsh Labrador tea, bogbean and several species of peat moss. There are also plants that are rare in the region, though not protected: thread sedge, hare's-tail cottongrass, cranberry and marsh cinquefoil.
Knowledge of the reserve's fauna is very limited; only a population of the alpine newt has been documented here. The greatest threat to the peat bogs is the lowering of the groundwater table, which leads to the disappearance of aquatic vegetation and the gradual overgrowth of the peat bogs by shrubs.
The reserve lies on State Treasury land, managed by the Oleśnica Śląska Forest District, and is supervised by the Regional Nature Conservator in Wrocław. There is no protection plan for it, but protective tasks apply, under which the area is subject to active protection.
