A square in the centre of Wałbrzych with a theatre, an amphitheatre and a sports hall, host to summer concerts and open-air film screenings.
Plac Teatralny (Theatre Square) lies in the centre of Wałbrzych, at the point where Traugutta, Lewartowskiego, Spokojna, Dojazdowa and Sikorskiego streets meet. It is one of the points you pass through when heading from the city centre towards the surrounding hills.
The square is home to the Jerzy Szaniawski Drama Theatre, next to which stand a sports hall and a municipal amphitheatre. The amphitheatre, known to locals as the "Acropolis", has twenty-nine columns arranged in an arc, joined at the top by a decorative cornice, with a white lamp globe mounted on each column.
The square used to be an extension of Lewartowskiego street and bore the German name Ritter Platz. A small garden on its grounds once held a sculpture called "Harpies". In 2010 the square underwent renovation: new paving was laid, greenery was added, benches and decorative lighting were installed, and the facades of nearby buildings were restored. The theatre building gained additional illumination at that time.
In the summer season the square hosts free cultural events organised by the Wałbrzych Culture Centre (Wałbrzyski Ośrodek Kultury) - concerts featuring musicians of the Sudeten Philharmonic, theatre performances and open-air film screenings, usually at weekends.
