"Wiry Mine" Underground Tourist Trail

About "Wiry Mine" Underground Tourist Trail

A former magnesite mine in Wirki with an underground tourist trail, now closed to visitors.

The "Wiry Mine" Underground Tourist Trail is a former magnesite mine in the village of Wirki, in Świdnica County. The trail for visitors has been closed.

Closure of the trail

The underground tourist trail in the Wiry mine stopped accepting visitors at the start of 2019. The owners decided to end tourist operations in favour of resuming magnesite extraction and bottling the mineral water discovered in the mine's workings. The closure is permanent, not a seasonal break.

History of the mine

The mine was a three-level magnesite mine. It began operating in 1956 and functioned until 2005. The underground tourist trail ran through workings almost 2 kilometres long, at depths reaching nearly 100 metres. In 1995, a spring of magnesium-rich water was discovered in the mine's workings, with a yield of 2,000 litres per minute.

Nearby

A few kilometres from the former mine rises Mount Ślęża with the neighbouring Mount Ślęża Nature Reserve, and the whole area is part of the Ślęża Landscape Park. A little closer is the hill of Radunia.
