About Wojsławice Arboretum

A botanical garden in Wojsławice near Niemcza with National Collections of rhododendrons, daylilies, boxwoods and peonies, part of the University of Wrocław.

Wojsławice Arboretum is a botanical garden in the Niemcza area in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, part of the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław since 1988. It is known for its rich collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, daylilies, boxwoods, peonies and rare species and varieties of trees and shrubs.

Location among the hills

Wojsławice lies 50 kilometres south of Wrocław and 2 kilometres east of Niemcza, within the Niemcza-Strzelin Hills protected landscape area, administratively in the Niemcza municipality, in Dzierżoniów County. The surrounding area is formed by the north-south ranges of the Gumin, Dębowe and Krzyżowe Hills, cut through by gentle ravines and gullies. The deepest of these carries the Ślęza river, flowing from south to north and fed by numerous streams. The arboretum itself lies in a picturesque basin above one of the right-bank tributaries of the Ślęza, on the northern slopes of the Dębowe Hills.

National Collections

The arboretum's collection includes 6,532 species and varieties of woody plants and 7,445 species and varieties of perennials. The Polish Society of Botanical Gardens has recognised the rhododendron collection, numbering 1,350 species and varieties, including 124 historic Seidel rhododendron varieties, the daylily collection of 3,550 species and varieties, and the boxwood collection of 144 species and varieties, as National Collections. In August 2021 this status was also granted to four further collections: hydrangeas, numbering 661 taxa and varieties, members of the witch-hazel family with 162 entries, peonies with 537 entries, and periwinkles, comprising about 50 species and varieties.

Polish Millennium Garden

In 2019 the Polish Millennium Garden was opened on the arboretum grounds, gathering a unique collection of varieties of plants of Polish breeding, as well as endangered, disappearing and protected plant species. It is the newest section of the garden, complementing the older rhododendron and perennial collections.

Nearby

Within a few kilometres of the arboretum lie other monuments of the region, including St Adalbert's Church in Niemcza, the palace in Piotrkówek and the palace in Kietlin. Closer to the arboretum itself, 100 metres away, is the pavilion with an exhibition about the arboretum.
