“Days They Took from Us…” is a performance made up of symbolic scenes. It was inspired by widely known events of World War II and by the “quiet stories” of ordinary Polish families, including the memories and experiences of the creators’ own relatives. These were people who had to grow up, love, lose and make decisions in a reality they did not choose. Script and direction: Kacper Pisarski.
The individual stories are not directly connected, but together they form a picture of the wartime experience of many people. The performance moves from the calm everyday life just before the outbreak of war, through a world dominated by violence, fear and hatred, to the birth of a new Poland, completely different from the one of 1939. Along the way, it asks who a person remains in a moment of trial, what happens to their values when the existing order collapses, and how to preserve love, dignity, hope and one's own identity when almost everything is taken away.
The creators point out that behind great history and the names in textbooks stand thousands of anonymous people whose fates often remain unknown, although they helped shape the later reality and the new society. In their view, “Days They Took from Us…” is not a story about violence, but about people, quiet heroes, their choices, transformations and attempts to keep their humanity. They were deprived of peace, loved ones, a sense of safety, dignity, freedom and sometimes even of their former selves. Yet from pain and loss something could be born that cannot be taken away so easily: memory, identity and the future.
