Burzowy Bridge

Wrocław
About Burzowy Bridge

A bridge in Ołbin, part of the Psie Pole water step and the Flood Gate, also usable as a footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

Burzowy Bridge in Ołbin is part of the Psie Pole water step, built in 1892-1897 as part of the Great Navigable Waterway. The crossing connects directly with the Flood Gate and the Psie Pole Weir, while also serving as a local footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

The technical heart of the Flood Gate

The bridge rests on abutments that also serve as abutments of the flood lock. Its deck carries rails: the longitudinal ones allow the gate's steel sluice to be retracted into a recess in the abutment, and the short transverse rails support the sluice from both sides, depending on which direction the water is pressing from. The right bank by the bridge is a levee separating the Kanał Miejski from the Stara Odra, while the left bank already belongs to the Ołbin district, from where Pasterska Street runs along the crest of the levee.

Rivets, wood and steel

The bridge's structure uses riveted connections of steel plates and sections. The deck is covered with a wooden surface, and the balustrades are made of steel. The clearance under the bridge is 4.34 metres at the normal water level and drops to 3.80 metres when the water reaches its maximum level.

Nearby

The bridge is a dozen or so minutes' walk from the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław.

In the same direction, by the Oder, lies the extensive Szczytnicki Park.
