A museum and educational-artistic centre in a styled castle in Pławna Dolna, with a string puppet theatre based on Silesian legends.
The Castle of Silesian Legends in Pławna Dolna is a building styled after a medieval castle, housing a museum and an educational-artistic centre devoted to the legends of the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains) and the Sudetes. It was created by the artist Dariusz Miliński, and the whole is surrounded by an educational-entertainment park with sculptures of figures from Silesian folk tales.
The castle was created on the initiative of Dariusz Miliński, a painter and set designer connected with Pławna since the 1990s. His goal was to revive the local community and create an artistic-educational space drawing on regional heritage and folklore. Today it is one of the most distinctive places promoting the legends of the Karkonosze and the Sudetes.
The main attraction of the interior is a puppet theatre using a string system, described as the only one of its kind in the world. Life-size puppets perform shows based on Silesian legends, with the Spirit of the Mountains in the lead role. In front of the castle entrance stand monumental sculptures of figures from the same tales.
The facility also serves as an educational centre: artistic and craft workshops for groups are held here, including pottery, lithography and blacksmithing workshops, as well as theatre and art classes.
Next to the castle is the Knights' Stronghold, styled as an open-air museum, with a palisade, watchtowers, an armoury and a replica of the Trojan Horse. This is an extension of the offer that families visiting the castle can also use.
Pławna Dolna lies in the Lubomierz municipality, in Lwówek Śląski County, surrounded by the hills and forests of the Sudetes and Karkonosze foothills. The Castle of Silesian Legends is one of the elements that has made this small village recognisable as a place combining art, education and local folklore.
