A sharp bend and viewpoint on the Sudetes Road between Szklarska Poręba and Świeradów-Zdrój, with a panorama of the Karkonosze and the Jelenia Góra Basin.
Zakręt Śmierci (Death's Bend) is a sharp road bend and viewpoint on regional road number 358, known as the Sudetes Road, between Szklarska Poręba and Świeradów-Zdrój. It lies on the slope of Czarna Góra and opens up a view over the Karkonosze and the Jelenia Góra Basin.
The bend was built between 1935 and 1937, as part of the construction of the Sudetes Road. It owes its name to the numerous car accidents that used to occur here because of the sharp angle and steep slope.
Alongside the construction of the bend, miners' tunnels were built beneath it, intended, if needed, to be used to blow up the road. This is a trace of pre-war defence plans in this part of the Sudetes.
Today the spot functions primarily as a roadside viewpoint, offering a panorama over the Karkonosze range and the Jelenia Góra Basin below.
Within a few kilometres are other natural attractions of the region: the Szklarka Waterfall, the Kamieńczyk Waterfall and the peak of Szrenica. Further towards Jelenia Góra stands Chojnik Castle.
