A concrete observation tower from 1906 on the summit of Wielka Sowa, the highest peak of the Owl Mountains.
The observation tower on Wielka Sowa stands on the summit of Wielka Sowa, the highest peak of the Owl Mountains, at an altitude of 1,015 metres above sea level. It was built between 1905 and 1906 from concrete blocks. It is owned and managed by the Pieszyce municipality.
The tower stands at a spot reached by tourist trails from several directions, making it a natural destination for hikes through this part of the Sudetes. The summit of Wielka Sowa itself, on which the tower stands, is described separately.
The structure was built from concrete blocks, which sets it apart from the typical stone observation towers built in the Sudetes in a similar period. The tower is now more than a hundred years old and has served as a viewpoint on the summit since it was built.
Within a few kilometres of the tower lie further peaks of the Owl Mountains: Sokół and Kalenica, on which another observation tower stands. Nearby is also the Riese Włodarz underground complex, a remnant of the post-war construction of underground infrastructure in this area.
