An active halloysite extraction site in Dunino, the only one of its kind in Poland, worked as an open pit since 1998.
Dunino Halloysite Mine is an active extraction site in Dunino, in Legnica County, south of the village, on the local road towards Święciany. It is the only place in Poland where halloysite is mined and one of the largest deposits of this mineral in the world.
The deposit has been worked as an open pit since 1998, and its resources are estimated at over 10 million tonnes of halloysite. The mineral accumulated as a result of the chemical weathering of basalts and basalt breccias, which took place during the Neogene. Besides the mine in Dunino, halloysite is mined industrially in only two other places in the world, in the United States and New Zealand.
This is an active industrial facility, not an attraction open to visitors. The pit area is not prepared for visits by outsiders and has no marked sightseeing route, and the available sources make no mention of any form of the mine being opened up to tourists.
Nearby, it is worth visiting the palace in Krotoszyce and the Museum of the Battle of the Kaczawa, dedicated to the history of the region.
