About Hillfort in Dunino

An early medieval hillfort from the 8th-9th century on the river Nysa Szalona near Dunino, with surviving ramparts and a moat, and no museum exhibition.

The hillfort in Dunino is an early medieval archaeological site on the river Nysa Szalona, between the villages of Krajów and Dunino, near the hamlet of Święciany, in Legnica County. Today, the visible remains at the site are earthen ramparts, with no museum exhibition.

A stronghold from over a thousand years ago

The hillfort is dated to the 8th-9th century, based on fragments of pottery found during research. The site is entered in both the heritage register and the heritage record.

Ramparts and moat

The oval site measures around 170 by 135 metres and covers an area of about 1.8 hectares. It is surrounded by two earthen ramparts separated by a moat 5-10 metres wide; the outer rampart is about 7 metres, the inner one about 5 metres.

One of the region's largest hillforts

The hillfort is regarded as one of the largest sites of its kind in the Legnica region. It has been studied since the 19th century.

Nearby

In the same village is the halloysite mine in Dunino.

A few kilometres further on stands the palace in Krotoszyce.
