Jewish Cemetery in Bierutów

Kijowice
About Jewish Cemetery in Bierutów

A walled Jewish cemetery from 1865 in Kijowice near Bierutów, with no surviving gravestones.

The Jewish cemetery in Bierutów lies in Kijowice, a few minutes from the centre of Bierutów. It is the burial ground of the Jewish community that lived in the town - it is also sometimes called the New Jewish Cemetery, to distinguish it from the older burial ground in Miłocice.

History of the site

The cemetery was founded in 1865. It occupies a small area of 0.2 hectares. During the Third Reich it survived undamaged, but was vandalised by the Polish population after the end of the Second World War.

State of preservation

No stone gravestone has survived to this day. Despite this, the site was entered in the heritage register in 1990. The whole cemetery is surrounded by a brick wall, which remains the main visible trace of the former burial ground.
