An underground tourist route in the former Liczyrzepa uranium mine in Kowary, opened to visitors in 2000, with radiation monitoring along the whole route.
The Kowary Adits are an underground tourist route running through a former uranium ore mine in Kowary. It is about 1,200 metres long and lets visitors descend into a place that for years was a strictly guarded mining facility.
After the Second World War, uranium extraction began at the Liczyrzepa mine, which then operated as the R-1 Industrial Plant. The extracted raw material was sent to the Soviet Union. Mining work ended in 1973.
From 1973, the Wrocław University of Technology carried out scientific research and student classes in the workings. The tourist route was opened to visitors on 24 April 2000.
The route has 13 dosimetric checkpoints, constantly monitored by the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine in Łódź. Thanks to continuous radiation monitoring, visiting the adits is safe.
The Kowary Adits neighbour the Liczyrzepa Mine, part of the same former mining complex, and the Podgórze Mine. In the area it is also worth visiting the Park of Miniatures of Lower Silesian Monuments.
