Mausoleum of Duke Jan of Ziębice

Kłodzko
About Mausoleum of Duke Jan of Ziębice

A neo-baroque chapel from 1904-1905 on Wielisławska Street in Kłodzko, commemorating the death of Duke Jan of Ziębice in the 1428 battle against the Hussites.

The Mausoleum of Duke Jan of Ziębice stands within Kłodzko, on Wielisławska Street, a dozen or so metres from the boundary of the Kłodzko-Zagórze district. It is a small neo-baroque chapel, a separate structure, not connected to any other church in the area.

A chapel commemorating the duke's death

The chapel was built in 1904-1905 of sandstone, on a central plan, in the neo-baroque style. It was designed by Ludwig Schneider. The building commemorates the death of Duke Jan of Ziębice, who was killed fighting the Hussites on 27 December 1428 in the Battle of Stary Wielisław.

A richly decorated interior and dome

The chapel has a richly decorated portal and pilasters, and its dome is crowned with a relief depicting the Silesian eagle and the region's coats of arms. Inside stands an altar, and the walls are decorated with frescoes by Wilhelm von Wörndle, depicting the duke's battle and death.
