A monument by Wzgórze Zamkowe (Castle Hill) in Lubin, commemorating the victims of the militia's suppression of a demonstration against martial law in August 1982.
The Memorial to the Victims of Lubin '82 commemorates the events of August 1982, when the Citizens' Militia suppressed a peaceful demonstration against martial law in Lubin. It stands by Wzgórze Zamkowe (Castle Hill), near the site of those events.
On 31 August 1982, militia officers shot dead three people and wounded several dozen more while dispersing a peaceful demonstration against martial law. These events are referred to as the Lubin Massacre. The monument was unveiled on the tenth anniversary of these events.
The monument's author is Zbigniew Frączkiewicz. It consists of eleven boulders, each engraved with a single letter, which together spell the word "Solidarność" (Solidarity). Three of the boulders support a cross, on whose surface are set the impressions of shoe soles and car tyre tracks.
Next to the main monument stand two smaller memorials, placed at the spots where individual men were killed. The first, a single boulder supporting a cross, is dedicated to Michał Adamowicz. The second, with two boulders supporting a cross, commemorates Mieczysław Poźniak and Andrzej Trajkowski. Each of these boulders is engraved with the surname preceded by the abbreviation "ŚP" (the late), the date 31.08.1982, and a separate sentence dedicated to the memory of that person.
