Gallery on the market square in Lądek-Zdrój, in the 18th-century house of the sculptor Michał Klahr the Elder, with exhibits on the history of the town and the spa.
The Michał Klahr the Elder Museum Gallery is a municipal gallery located on the market square in Lądek-Zdrój, at Rynek 1, in the former house of Michał Klahr the Elder, a sculptor and representative of Silesian Baroque. The building was entered in the heritage register by a decision of the voivodeship heritage conservator on 24 February 1964.
The previous house on this site burned down in the great fire of the town in 1739, which destroyed 154 houses. The present townhouse dates from the second half of the 18th century and is built in the late Renaissance style - a three-storey house with a cellar, set with its gable end facing the market square. Above the entrance is a portal with a polychrome relief of the Madonna and Child, the figures on it are 160 centimetres tall, and beside it is the artist's mark with the date 1723. The façade is topped with a sandstone relief of the Eye of Providence, dated 1741 or 1742.
Michał Klahr the Elder moved to Lądek-Zdrój with his wife Katarzyna in 1724 from Kłodzko. He lived and worked in this townhouse, having his workshop here, until his death in 1742. The institution dedicated to his house opened in 2006.
The gallery gathers and displays exhibits related to the history of the town, the spa and the Lądek-Zdrój municipality. The collections include copies of old prints and photographs showing the development of Lądek-Zdrój from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, archival building plans and documents, and sculptures of a sacred character.
The market square in Lądek-Zdrój borders the John Paul II Spa Park and the Holy Trinity Monument. A walk around the town can be combined with a visit to the Lądek-Zdrój Arboretum.
