A private museum of minerals and fossils in a historic villa from 1885 in Szklarska Poręba, run by the Sokołowski family.
The Mineralogical Museum in Szklarska Poręba is a private institution housed in a historic villa from 1885, one of two museums of this kind in the town, alongside the "Juna" Earth Museum. It is run by the Sokołowski family, who also own the Museum of Stones in Kamień Pomorski.
The museum was founded in 1993. The exhibition includes fossils of dinosaurs and other extinct animals, including trilobites, as well as the so-called Carboniferous Forest, meaning fossilised trunks of the Dadoxylon tree, and stromatolites.
The collection of minerals and rocks includes, among others, calcites and stalactites from Wojcieszów, metal ores from Trepča and Cavnic, and specimens from the Karkonosze and the Izera Mountains. The collection also includes the Gibeon meteorite.
The exhibition is housed in a villa built in 1885, now listed on the register of immovable heritage sites. The building's stone structure is itself worth viewing, alongside the specimens gathered inside.
