About Monument to St John of Nepomuk by St Matthias' Church

An 18th-century figure of St John of Nepomuk in front of St Matthias' Church in Wrocław's Old Town.

The Monument to St John of Nepomuk by St Matthias' Church is an 18th-century figure standing in front of St Matthias' Church in Wrocław's Old Town.

Figure of the saint

The sculpture dates from 1723 and depicts St John of Nepomuk, one of the many Nepomuk statues erected at the time in the cities of Central Europe.

Former location

The figure previously stood in the cemetery by St Matthias' Church, which no longer exists today. The monument itself survived the change of surroundings and stands in its current spot in front of the church.

The Nepomuk as a type of monument

Figures of St John of Nepomuk, known as Nepomuks, were erected in the cities of Central Europe from the 18th century onwards. This is one of many such sculptures in the region, characteristic of the urban landscape of former Silesia.

Practical information

  • The monument stands in front of St Matthias' Church in Wrocław's Old Town, and can be viewed at any time, since it stands outdoors.
  • It's a good stop while sightseeing in the centre, close to the Market Hall, Tumski Bridge and the Archcathedral of St John the Baptist.
  • Along the way it's also worth visiting the Market Square with the Town Hall.
  • It's worth combining the visit with a longer walk around the Old Town, since the monument itself is a small but distinctive point on the route.
