A museum in a historic Umgebinde house in Karpacz, devoted to the history of sport, tourism and nature conservation in the Karkonosze.
The Museum of Sport and Tourism in Karpacz gathers exhibits, documents and memorabilia connected with the development of sport, tourism and nature conservation in the Karkonosze. It is housed in a historic 18th-century Umgebinde (Upper Lusatian) house on ulica Mikołaja Kopernika.
The museum was ceremonially opened on 4 September 1974. By the end of 2011 it had been visited by more than one million three hundred and fifty-eight thousand people. Until 2002 it was a branch of the Museum of Sport and Tourism in Warsaw, and since 1 January 2003 it has operated as an independent cultural institution of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship self-government.
The collection includes badges, awards, stamps, posters, coins, banners, sports clothing and equipment, travel accessories, works of art on sporting themes, photographs, films, books, magazines and archival material connected with physical culture, tourism and sightseeing.
The first section is devoted to the origins and development of tourism in the Karkonosze, with particular attention to Polish tourism: it shows the work of miners, metalworkers, woodcutters, shepherds and herbalists, old tourist equipment and the role of Poles in the region's development. The second section concerns the development of winter sports, above all luge and bobsleigh, since after the Second World War Karpacz became the centre of these disciplines in Poland. The third section is devoted to nature conservation in the Karkonosze, their geology and climate. Alongside the permanent exhibition, the museum also organises changing temporary exhibitions on the building's upper floor, presents online exhibitions and an exhibit of the month.
