The academic museum of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, gathering works by staff and students since 1954, today operating as the Centre for Art Documentation.
The Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław is an academic institution gathering works by the staff and students of the Wrocław Academy of Fine Arts. It has operated since 1954, initially under the then State Higher School of Fine Arts, which changed its name to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1996.
The museum collects outstanding works by students and lecturers, as well as exhibits useful for the academy's teaching. The collection is divided into sections corresponding to the academy's main fields of study: Composition, Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking, Glass, Ceramics, and Interior Architecture. By the end of the twentieth century the collection numbered about five thousand works.
The exhibits from the individual sections form a permanent exhibition running since 1960. Alongside it, the museum regularly organises temporary exhibitions and educational museum activities for young people, allowing them to get to know the works produced in the various studios.
Until 1970 the museum was housed at Plac Polski, in the academy's building. Since 1970 it has operated at its current location on Traugutta Street. The museum was founded by Halina Pawlikowska, a representative of the Wrocław School of Glass, who ran it from its establishment.
In 2015 the institution was renamed the Centre for Art Documentation, functioning as a university-wide unit within the structure of the Academy of Fine Arts. Since 2017 the centre has been a member of the Association of University Museums.
In the immediate vicinity, within a few hundred metres, several other museums and exhibition venues operate, including the Museum of Post and Telecommunications, the Museum of Architecture and the Awangarda gallery. A little further, still within walking distance, is the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice.
