About Orthodox Church of St Maximus of Gorlice in Głogów

An active parish Orthodox church from 2001-2007 in Głogów, with five domes and polychrome painting from 2010.

Orthodox Church of St Maximus of Gorlice is an active Orthodox parish church in Głogów, standing on Bolesław Krzywousty Street. It belongs to the Lubin deanery of the Diocese of Wrocław and Szczecin of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church.

A new building on an old bunker

The church was built between 2001 and 2007 to a design by city architect Dariusz Wojtowicz, on the site of a former German bunker. This means that despite its Orthodox tradition, the building is one of the youngest churches in the city rather than a centuries-old monument.

Five domes and consecration in 2007

The church has five domes, the tallest of which reaches 20 metres in height. The iconostasis was made in 2007, and on 19 May of that year the church was consecrated by Archbishop Jeremiasz, ordinary of the Diocese of Wrocław and Szczecin.

Polychrome by Russian artists

In 2010 the interior was decorated with polychrome painting by Russian artists Oleg Osetrov and Nikolai Berdnikov. It is these interior paintings, alongside the domes, that make up the church's most recognisable feature.
