An Ossolineum museum on Wrocław's Market Square, devoted to the only surviving manuscript of "Pan Tadeusz" and to the history of the fight for independence.
The "Pan Tadeusz" Museum is housed in the Pod Złotym Słońcem (Under the Golden Sun) tenement house on Wrocław's Market Square, at number 6. It is part of the Ossolineum, opened in May 2016, devoted to the manuscript of Adam Mickiewicz's poem and to the history of the fight for independence.
The building housing the museum is a baroque tenement house from the 18th century, built of brick. It is listed on the register of immovable heritage monuments, with further entries from 1949, 1962 and 2010.
The main permanent exhibition displays the only surviving manuscript of Mickiewicz's poem, surrounded by several hundred manuscripts, early printed books, prints and everyday objects, accompanied by multimedia commentary and applications.
The second permanent exhibition tells the story of the idea of freedom carried into the realities of the Second World War and the post-war years, through the fate of a generation that grew up in a homeland free after 123 years of partitions, and in 1939 had to stand up again to fight for independence.
The museum was created thanks to Norwegian funds and EEA funds, from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, as well as Polish funding and donations from the residents of Wrocław. In 2019 it received a jury commendation from the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA).
