An underground tourist route in Kamienna Góra with a story-driven visit and exhibits from the Second World War.
Project Arado is an underground tourist route in Kamienna Góra, built on the canvas of a true story from the German arms industry of the Second World War. Instead of a traditional guided visit, the route takes the form of a story-driven game in which participants take on the role of a Polish intelligence agent.
In 1943 the German engineering department of the Arado Flugzeugwerke aircraft works was moved to Kamienna Góra, then called Landeshut. The plant was hidden in former weaving mills and placed under a secrecy clause, and beneath the town a network of underground corridors and shelters was built as part of the Third Reich's arms industry.
The route covers around a kilometre of underground corridors, and the visit lasts around an hour. Along it are placed over 100 authentic exhibits from the Second World War period: parts of the German V1 and V2 weapons, remains of an Enigma cipher machine, rifles, soldiers' equipment and a 280-millimetre Nebelwerfer rocket mortar shell. There is also a model of the futuristic Arado E.555 aircraft.
The visit is led by a guide taking on the role of a Polish intelligence agent, and the whole route takes the form of a story-driven game rather than a classic tour of an exhibition. This is what sets Project Arado apart from typical military museums.
Closest by, in Kamienna Góra itself, stands the Grodztwo Castle in Kamienna Góra.
A few kilometres further it is worth visiting the Cistercian Abbey in Krzeszów.
In the same area are also the Colourful Lakes, if after the underground route you fancy a walk among nature.
