Smogornia

Borowice
About Smogornia

A peak of the Śląski Grzbiet in the Karkonosze, about 1491 m above sea level, by the Polish-Czech border, not directly accessible to tourists.

Smogornia is a peak in the main ridge of the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains), in the Śląski Grzbiet (Silesian Ridge), right by the Polish-Czech border. It lies in the municipality for which Borowice is the base village for trips into this area.

Height and measurement

The peak reaches about 1491 metres above sea level. However, the measurement point is lower, at 1488.6 metres, which is why almost all guidebooks and tourist maps give a rounded, slightly lower height of 1489 metres.

Border and location

The Polish-Czech border runs a few dozen metres south of the peak, although the summit itself lies on the Polish side. The area around Smogornia belongs to both the Polish and Czech Karkonosze National Park.

Structure and vegetation

The massif is built of Karkonosze granite. On the southern slopes stretch extensive screes, that is, fields of granite rock blocks. The summit is almost entirely covered with dwarf mountain pine and mountain meadows.

Trails in the area

The summit itself is inaccessible to tourists; no trail leads to the top. About 300 metres to the north runs the red trail, known as the Polish-Czech Friendship Trail, while the green trail leads through the nearby Kocioł Smogorni (Smogornia Cirque).

Neighbouring peaks

The ridge in this part of the Karkonosze continues to further elevations. East of Smogornia, towards Śnieżka, lie Tępy Szczyt and Kopa, and in the valley below the ridge you can descend to the Dziki Wodospad (Wild Waterfall).

Practical information

  • The starting point for the Smogornia area is the vicinity of Borowice, away from the main tourist villages of the Karkonosze.
  • The summit cannot be reached directly; it is worth planning a route along the nearby red or green trail.
  • The area lies within the national park, so the rule of moving only along marked trails applies.
