Spire on Solny Square

Wrocław
About Spire on Solny Square

A granite, flame-shaped obelisk on Solny Square, designed by Adam Wyspiański and erected in 1996.

The Spire on Solny Square in Wrocław, also called the Small Spire, is a monument standing on Solny Square in the very centre of the city, a few steps from the Market Square. It takes the form of a wavy obelisk resembling a flame in shape, made of granite and set on a stepped plinth.

Who designed it and when it was built

The monument was designed by Wrocław sculptor Adam Wyspiański, and it was erected on the square in 1996. Apart from his name, the monument bears no dedicatory inscription.

What the flame shape symbolises

The shape of the obelisk refers to a medieval event: the accusation of a group of Jews of harming Christians and their burning at the stake on this spot. According to another version, it refers to events from the 15th century, when, under the influence of the fiery sermons of the Franciscan friar John of Capistrano, Wrocław burghers carried furniture, clothing and other items deemed too extravagant out of their homes and burned them, among other places, on Solny Square.

What stood here before

From 1827 to 1944 the same spot was occupied by a monument to Field Marshal Gebhard von Blücher.
