St Peter's Church in Głogów

Głogów
About St Peter's Church in Głogów

A Romanesque church from the end of the 12th century, demolished at the end of the 19th century - today a lapidarium with exposed foundations stands on the site.

Of St Peter's Church in Głogów, only exposed foundations survive today, in a lapidarium. The church itself, built at the end of the 12th century as a Romanesque basilica, has not existed since the end of the 19th century.

Parish church and Dominican monastery

The building served as the parish church for the left-bank part of Głogów, until St Nicholas's Church was built. Bishop Thomas I settled Dominicans in the then-abandoned church and founded a monastery for them. The friars used the building for more than two centuries.

Fire and demolition

In 1789 the building was destroyed by fire. It later housed an arsenal and sappers' barracks. At the end of the 19th century the church was demolished and has not existed since.

Archaeological discoveries and the lapidarium

Between 1963 and 1965 archaeologists uncovered the foundations of three apses from the original building and a straight-closed chancel, created after the Dominicans' 13th-century rebuilding. In 2006 a lapidarium was opened on the site, displaying the uncovered foundations and also serving as a monument to John Paul II.
