A nine-metre concrete sculpture by Tadeusz Kantor in the shape of a chair, designed in 1970 and realised in 2011.
The Chair is a nine-metre concrete sculpture by Tadeusz Kantor, standing at the junction of Rzeźnicza street and Nowy Świat street in Wrocław. It has the shape of a folding wooden garden chair, enlarged to monumental proportions.
The sculpture was created as one of the projects prepared for the Wrocław '70 Art Symposium, in which artists produced works intended for urban space. Kantor designed The Chair in 1970, but it was only realised on 11 August 2011, based on his sketch, by architects Tomasz Myczkowski and Dorota Krakowska, the heir to Kantor's copyright.
Kantor called this project an "impossible monument" and believed that sculptures should exist in motion and amid life, not detached from it. An almost identical sculpture, differing in its surface texture, was made in 1995 in Hucisko, near where Kantor lived.
A few hundred metres from here stands the Wrocław Town Hall.
The Wrocław Market Square is also close by.
The National Forum of Music is not far away.
