About Żmij

A hill 887 m above sea level in the Owl Mountains, with a paragliding launch meadow and a group of rock outcrops on the southern slope.

Żmij is a hill 887 m above sea level in the central part of the Owl Mountains, in the Central Sudetes. German sources called it Ottenstein or Otterstein. It lies in the Owl Mountains Landscape Park, around 2.5 kilometres east of Jugów.

Shape of the summit

Żmij has the form of a dome-shaped hill with steep slopes and an indistinct summit. Characteristic is its northern ridge slope, which gently drops about 20 metres below the summit before turning into the long, steep southern slope of the neighbouring Kalenica, rising to 964 m above sea level.

Meadow and rock outcrops

On the south-western slope of Żmij there is a meadow that serves as a launch site for paragliders. On the southern slope, below the summit, there is a group of rock outcrops. The slopes of the hill are entirely covered with lower montane spruce forest.
