Gioacchino Rossini, L'occasione fa il ladro („The Opportunity Makes the Thief”). The opera will be performed by soloists and the Lower Silesian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marek Wroniszewski, who is also the music director. The stage direction is by Hanna Marasz-Fiugajska.
Cast:
The opera was written in 1812 to a libretto by Luigi Prividali, based on a vaudeville by Eugène Scribe. During Rossini's lifetime, it was his most popular one-act opera. The plot is driven by an accidental swap of suitcases, which leads to a series of mix-ups and deliberate changes of identity. The comedy of errors is also a story about appearances, social roles, and the search for one's own identity.
The music combines the lightness typical of the young Rossini with theatrical grandeur. Ensembles, virtuosic arias, and lively orchestration drive the pace of the action. The overture sets the tone with a compact introduction featuring a storm depiction, which Rossini later reused in The Barber of Seville.
