“The Ugly Duckling” is a puppet show by Zdrojowy Teatr Animacji in Jelenia Góra, based on H.C. Andersen’s story in Cecylia Niewiadomska’s translation. The adaptation and direction are by Michał Tramer, the set design by Anna Adasiak, and the music by Tomasz Giczewski. The cast includes:
The action takes place in a duck farmyard, a fenced-in place where “there is always plenty and order.” That order is disrupted when a chick unlike all the others appears. From Andersen’s story we know that the Ugly Duckling, despite the wrongs it suffers, will discover its own worth and eventually spread its wings. The performance also asks what will happen to the farmyard and to those who bullied the main character, and whether their world will stay the same. It also asks what role the wild ducks living beyond the farmyard will play.
Alongside a story about growing up and discovering one’s potential, a contemporary echo emerges: the question of how we treat “others” and “strangers.” The creators invite audiences to take stock of their own farmyard and to talk with young viewers about exclusion and fear of the unfamiliar.
Practical information: the show is intended for children aged 6 and up, accompanied by adults. A free guided tour of the theatre will follow the performance.
