Borowa

Jedlina-Zdrój
About Borowa

The highest peak of the Wałbrzych Mountains (853.3 m) with a viewing tower from 2017 on the border of Wałbrzych and Jedlina-Zdrój.

Borowa is the highest peak of the Góry Czarne and of the whole Wałbrzych Mountains, lying in the Central Sudetes. It stands 853.3 metres above sea level and is also the highest point within the administrative boundaries of both Wałbrzych and Jedlina-Zdrój, as the border between the two municipalities runs right across the summit.

Where the name Borowa comes from

The current name Borowa has been in use since 1949, when it replaced earlier names. Before that the peak was called Góra Czarna or Wielka Czarna, and in German Schwarze-Berg, Schwarzeberg or Schwartzenberg. These names referred to the dark spruce forest that still covers most of the slopes today.

The summit's volcanic past

Borowa's dome is built of red rhyolites, popularly known as porphyries, together with their accompanying tuffs, as well as dark trachybasalts, also known as melaphyres. These rocks bear witness to past volcanic activity in this part of the Sudetes.

Viewing tower and tourist infrastructure

On the summit stands a viewing tower built in 2017, over 16 metres high. Nearby there is a wooden shelter, benches, bicycle racks and information boards. Earlier, until the early 1990s, the view opened up from a clearing on the summit before it became overgrown with forest.

Trails to the summit

Borowa is reached by the red trail, running from Wałbrzych Główny through the summit, the Przełęcz pod Borową pass and the Przełęcz Kozia pass to the Drużyna viewpoint, and on to the Przełęcz Szybka pass. The second route is a loop of the black trail running through Kamieńsk, the Przełęcz Kozia pass and Glinik Stary.

Nature protection

The Borowa massif forms part of the Wałbrzych Sudetes Landscape Park, established in 1998. The slopes are covered mostly by a single-species spruce forest.
