About Julek - Sculpture on the Market Square in Legnica

An outdoor sculpture by Edward Mirowski depicting a boy with a satchel, on the Legnica Market Square by the Art Gallery.

On the Legnica Market Square, right next to the Art Gallery, stands a small sculpture depicting a boy with a large satchel on his back. It is called Julek and is the first monument in a series depicting figures of small residents of Legnica.

A boy with a catapult in his satchel

The sculpture depicts a small schoolboy with a large satchel, out of which a catapult protrudes. On his head he wears a newspaper cap. The work was created by Legnica sculptor Edward Mirowski, and it was unveiled on 30 May 2014.

The first in the Children of Legnica series

Julek opens the "Children of Legnica" series of sculptures, which aims to show figures of the city's young residents across the decades, from the 1950s, through the present day, to the future. The idea for the series itself stirred controversy in Legnica, with some residents accusing it of kitsch.
