the region's largest post-glacial lake, resorts on the water
Lake Kunickie lies in the municipality of Kunice in Legnica County, a few kilometres from Legnica. It covers an area of about 95 hectares and is the largest lake of the Legnica Lake District, as well as one of the larger natural bodies of water in Lower Silesia. The water stretches for over a kilometre in length and a similar width, with a maximum depth estimated at around 7 metres.
The lake already existed in early modern times - the Silesian geographer Mikołaj Henel described it in 1613 as "Cunicensis lacus". On the eastern side there is a small island called Mewia Wyspa (Gull Island), where large gull colonies once nested; they were destroyed by a fire in 1950. On the land that today forms the southern stretch of the shore, a Lusatian culture hillfort stood during the Bronze and Iron Ages.
A guarded bathing area with a beach, mostly grassy with patches of sand, operates on the lake. A lit promenade with benches and sun loungers runs along the southern shore, and a route for pedestrians and cyclists circles the lake. A WOPR (Voluntary Water Rescue Service) base and a holiday resort operate by the water. The lake is a popular spot for sailing, windsurfing and fishing - bream, perch, pike and pikeperch are among the species caught here. Check current water conditions for bathing on the GIS Bathing Site Service (sk.gis.gov.pl).
A few kilometres from the lake, towards Legnica and across the municipality of Kunice, you can find several smaller attractions of the region:
