Library of the Holy Pilgrim

Głogów
About Library of the Holy Pilgrim

A monument to Pope John Paul II and a lapidarium on John Paul II Square in Głogów, erected on the site of the Church of St Peter, which has not existed since the 19th century.

The Library of the Holy Pilgrim is a monument standing on John Paul II Square in Głogów, unveiled on 11 November 2006. Despite its name, it is not a building with a book collection, but a stone structure commemorating Pope John Paul II, erected on the site where a medieval Church of St Peter once stood.

A monument and lapidarium in one

The structure combines two functions: it commemorates the late pope and serves as a lapidarium, that is, a place displaying preserved fragments of the stone architecture of the now-vanished church. This combination explains the name "library": the stone elements of the former church are read here like pages of a book telling the history of the place.

The site of the former Church of St Peter

The Church of St Peter, on whose foundations the monument was erected, has not existed since the 19th century. John Paul II Square in the centre of Głogów, where the Library of the Holy Pilgrim now stands, is close to other landmarks of the city, including the Castle of the Dukes of Głogów and the Głogów town hall.
