About Schaffgotsch Family Mausoleum in Raszów

A Renaissance burial chapel of the von Schaffgotsch family from 1577 by the church in Raszów, with one of the most valuable sepulchral ensembles in Lower Silesia.

The Schaffgotsch Family Mausoleum in Raszów is a historic burial chapel attached to the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Kamienna Góra County.

A burial chapel from 1577

The chapel was added to the church in 1577 as a resting place for the powerful Silesian von Schaffgotsch family of Grodztwo. It contains one of the most extensive and valuable sepulchral ensembles in Lower Silesia.

Family tombs

In the centre of the chapel stand two tall stone tomb chests: those of Hans I Schaffgotsch, who died in 1565, and his wife Salomea née von Nimtsch, who died in 1567, and of Hans II Schaffgotsch, who died in 1572, and his wife Margarethe née von Hochberg, who died in 1574. Both tombs have richly sculpted decoration on their slabs and chests.

A Renaissance wall tomb

The western wall of the chapel is taken up along its full height by a monumental Renaissance tomb of white marble, showing the deceased in full figure, dressed in armour. The epitaph plate is framed by pilasters with candelabra motifs, inscriptions and coats of arms, with a Resurrection scene in the crowning section and a depiction of God the Father at the top.

Slabs and epitaphs

Along the base of the chapel's walls stand six Renaissance tomb slabs from the 16th and 17th centuries, and eleven Renaissance epitaphs of family members from 1590-1621, of varying size and level of detail. Among them are slabs dedicated to, among others, Heinrich Schaffgotsch, who died in 1580, Elena Rothkirch, who died in 1616, and Heinrich von Tschirnhaus, who died in 1614 - each bearing the coats of arms of both the father's and mother's families.
