dam reservoir on the Nysa Szalona in Jawor County
Słup Reservoir is a large dam reservoir on the Nysa Szalona, located in the Sudeten Foothills in Jawor County, in the Męcinka municipality, about 1 km north-west of the boundaries of Jawor. It is one of the larger artificial reservoirs in Lower Silesia, important mainly as a flood-control facility and an angling area.
Preparations began in 1968, and the decision to build the reservoir was made by the Council of Ministers in resolution No. 156/73 of 6 July 1973 “on the development of the copper industry”. The reservoir was built by the Poznań-based firm “Energopol-7” with subcontractors between 1974 and 1978, damming the bed of the Nysa Szalona with an earth-and-concrete dam 21 m high and 940 m long. The flooded area covered the evacuated and demolished villages of Brachów and Żarek. The reservoir covers 4.9 km² and holds a capacity of about 38.69 million m³.
The reservoir was originally meant to supply water to the Legnica-Głogów Copper District; today it no longer serves that function - its main role is regulating the flow of the Nysa Szalona and flood protection.
In practice, recreation at the reservoir is limited to angling, managed by the Polish Angling Association - 18 fish species live here. The reservoir is also an important bird refuge: about 25 species nest here, and during migration as many as 80 different species can be observed. A seasonal footpath about 5 km long runs along the northern shore. Underwater, in the area of the former village of Brachów, lies the palace where Field Marshal Blücher planned the Battle of the Katzbach in 1813 - the obelisk commemorating it also remains submerged.
The reservoir is surrounded by villages with historic buildings and municipal libraries:
