A Wrocław cultural institution from 2008 devoted to contemporary art and new media, in a former coffee roastery on Widok Street.
WRO Art Centre is a Wrocław cultural institution operating since 2008, focused on contemporary art, new media and technological experimentation. It is housed on Widok Street 7, in the former Otto Stiebler coffee roastery, which had also previously been a malthouse.
The institution's roots go back to 1988, when the independent formation Open Studio/WRO was established on the initiative of Violetta Kutlubasis-Krajewska, Piotr Krajewski and Zbigniew Kupisz. In 1997 it transformed into the WRO Art Centre Foundation, which on 19 January 2005 obtained the status of a public benefit organisation. WRO Art Centre, established in 2008, continues the experience and projects of this group, and since 1989 the foundation has organised the WRO International Media Art Biennale.
The centre specialises in presenting phenomena from the field of contemporary art, new media and technological experimentation. It functions as a venue for exhibitions, original projects and art mediation, operating under the patronage of the Wrocław local government. Besides exhibitions, it organises concerts, film screenings, lectures and workshops, and also runs the Media Lab and residencies for artists and curators. The institution's collection includes media works dating back to the 1970s.
For the youngest visitors there is an educational programme, the Little WRO Workshop, and on site there is a media reading room. The centre also runs the recurring WRO Media Art Biennale, one of the recognisable events of this kind in Poland.
WRO Art Centre lies right in the centre of Wrocław, close to other cultural institutions. Nearby are the Royal Palace, the Historical Museum and the Museum of Medal Art, and it's also a walk away to the Town Hall and the Market Square.
