The only museum in Poland devoted to medal-making and phalerism, with a collection of about 50,000 medals and decorations in the Royal Palace in Wrocław.
The Museum of Medal Art in Wrocław is the only institution in Poland specialising in collecting objects of medal-making and phalerism. It was founded in 1965 as one of seven branches of the Historical Museum, which together form the Wrocław City Museum.
The museum's home is the Royal Palace (the former Spätgen Palace) at Kazimierza Wielkiego 35. The building served as the residence of the Prussian rulers of the Hohenzollern dynasty from 1750 to 1918, and has operated as a museum since 1926. The Museum of Medal Art has been housed here since 2009 and shares the building with the Historical Museum, the second branch of the Wrocław City Museum at this location.
The collection numbers about 50,000 medals, medallions, plaques and orders, decorations and badges, Polish and foreign. The museum also runs a library of works by Polish and foreign medal-makers. The collection is presented as part of the "1000 Years of Wrocław" exhibition, occupying the entire Royal Palace.
The museum lies in the very heart of the Old Town, next to Wolności Square and the Market Square. A few minutes' walk away is also Solny Square, and in the other direction the New Synagogue.
