Concerts in Wrocław and Lower Silesia: philharmonics, clubs, churches and culture centres. Pick a venue and a town, then the music you like.

This is the page of music events from the calendar: classical, jazz, chamber concerts and touring bands. We do not name artists or dates here, because they change every week. Instead we show where concerts take place, how the halls differ and how to buy a ticket. The full calendar of all event types is in the section events.

Where can you hear a concert in Wrocław?

Concerts are most often held in the Radio Wrocław Concert Hall, in the National Forum of Music and in the Stary Klasztor club, including its Stained Glass Hall. Look for jazz at Vertigo Jazz Club & Restaurant, and for bigger shows at the Centennial Hall and Hala Orion.

The National Forum of Music on Plac Wolności is one of the largest concert venues in Europe and an institution with its own orchestras and choirs. The building has four halls and an organ, and it has been praised for its architecture and acoustics. By comparison, the Centennial Hall is a UNESCO site built of reinforced concrete, with a dome that was the largest of its kind in the world when it was built, and it is a place for events on a large scale.

If you like classic interiors, check whether the calendar lists a concert at the Wrocław Opera, a historic building on Świdnicka Street. The opera mainly stages operas and ballets, but it remains one of the most musical addresses in the city.

What concerts take place in churches and unusual interiors?

Concerts are held in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St Christopher, in the Oratorium Marianum and in some historic buildings. Such an evening has a different character from a concert in a club, because the interior itself sets the tone for the music.

To this group belongs the Synagogue under the White Stork on Włodkowica Street. It is one of two active synagogues in Wrocław, it was designed by Carl Ferdinand Langhans, and it took its name from an inn that earlier stood on the plot. If the calendar shows an event in such a place, read the description of the building before you go and allow extra time at the entrance.

Where to go for a concert outside Wrocław?

The region has several strong centres. In Jelenia Góra concerts are given by the Lower Silesian Philharmonic in two concert halls, and in Wałbrzych by the Sudeten Philharmonic. Besides the philharmonics, look at clubs and culture centres: Klub A'propos in Wałbrzych, the Teatr Zdrojowy in Szczawno-Zdrój, the Jelenia Góra Cultural Centre and the Kłodzko Cultural Centre.

Wałbrzych also has Stara Kopalnia, a revitalised former mining complex with an industry museum, a ceramics studio and a contemporary art gallery, which appears among the venues of events. For town calendars see Wałbrzych and Jelenia Góra, as well as Lubin, Bolesławiec and Oława.

In Głogów concerts and plays are hosted by the Municipal Cultural Centre with a performance hall and a smaller Club Concert Stage, and in Świdnica by the Świdnica Centre of Culture with a hall on the Market Square and the Bolko Club. Concerts also happen in Trzebnica, Bolesławiec and Lubin, in the culture centres of local towns.

How do the concert halls of the region differ?

A concert hall is not only an address, it is also a sound and a kind of evening. Philharmonics and concert halls focus on classical and chamber music, clubs on jazz and entertainment, and culture centres combine both. That is why it pays to choose the same kind of music by venue.

  • National Forum of Music: four halls and an organ, an institution with its own ensembles.
  • Radio Wrocław Concert Hall: a regular point for concerts in the city centre.
  • Lower Silesian Philharmonic in Jelenia Góra: two concert halls, one named after Stefan Strahl and the other after Ludomir Różycki.
  • Sudeten Philharmonic in Wałbrzych: a philharmonic in a town that also has Stara Kopalnia and Klub A'propos.
  • Capitol Musical Theatre in Wrocław: a music stage that appears in the calendar next to concerts.
  • Teatr Zdrojowy in Szczawno-Zdrój: a hall that appears in the calendar next to the Wałbrzych stages.

Hala Orion and the Centennial Hall are addresses for shows on a larger scale, while halls in culture centres in Lubin, Bolesławiec, Trzebnica or Oława receive touring bands. When you choose a hall, open its card or the page of the town and see which events are held there most often.

What does the opera sound like and what else plays in historic buildings?

The Wrocław Opera has a historic building on Świdnicka Street: it was raised as the Municipal Theatre to a design by Carl Ferdinand Langhans, burned down twice and was twice rebuilt. After the second fire the auditorium was raised, the flies and the portico were extended, and sculptures of the muses were placed on the roof. The building is entered in the register of monuments.

If you are interested in operas and ballets, see the section theatre and opera. The calendar of music events also lists other historic interiors, for example Stara Kopalnia in Wałbrzych, the former Julia coal mine, today a centre of science and art. A concert gains extra context if you see the industry museum before you go in.

Concerts in summer, outdoors and for families

Summer concerts under the open sky take place where there is room for them. The description of Teatralny Square in Wałbrzych mentions an amphitheatre with summer concerts and open-air film screenings. Similar events may appear in other towns of the region.

Weather changes plans, so for an outdoor concert ask the organiser what happens if it rains. Evenings outside are cooler than the day, so take something warm. If you want certainty, choose a hall with a roof: a philharmonic, a church or a culture centre.

Some concerts are aimed at families. Look for them in the section of events for children, and in the music calendar pay attention to venues with a family offer, such as the Zdrojowy Animation Theatre in Jelenia Góra. The age of the audience is given by the organiser in the event description.

How do you choose a concert for the evening?

Start with the venue: philharmonics mean classical and chamber music, clubs mean jazz, covers and touring bands, culture centres mix both, and churches suit music of reflection. Only then look at the performers.

If you go with someone who does not listen to classical music, begin with a club or a culture centre and a shorter programme. A philharmonic concert is best shared with someone curious, not someone who is made to come. You can split the evening: first a walk around the hall, then the concert, and dinner nearby at the end. Details of the programme are on the event card.

How do you buy a ticket for a concert?

On the event card click Buy ticket. The button leads to the ticketing service KupBilecik or Bilety24. There you choose seats, pay and receive a ticket in the form the organiser provides.

The calendar is fed by an import from these services, run every night, and by submissions from organisers. Prices, hours and entry rules are set by the organiser, so confirm them before travelling to another town.

How do you combine a concert with an evening in town?

The easiest way is to add an event of another type in the same area. After a concert you can go to cabaret or to theatre, and if you like sightseeing, there are many addresses with attraction cards near the concert halls. The full list of cultural places is in the catalogue of culture.

  • An evening in central Wrocław: a concert at the National Forum of Music or at the Opera, then a walk around Plac Wolności and Teatralny Square.
  • A day in Wałbrzych: Stara Kopalnia, and in the afternoon the philharmonic or a club.
  • A day in Jelenia Góra: a concert at the philharmonic and the drama theatre in the same town.
