Events in Wałbrzych: concerts at the Sudeten Philharmonic, plays, Kino Apollo and clubs, plus ideas for sightseeing before the evening.
Wałbrzych is a town where music clearly dominates the calendar, but you will also find theatre, cabaret and cinema. Events take place in the philharmonic hall, in a former coal mine, in clubs and in a sports hall, so a lot depends on what kind of evening you want. Below we describe where things happen and what to add to the outing to turn it into a whole day in town.
The music calendar is the largest part of the events in this town. The main address is the Sudeten Philharmonic, but concerts also take place in clubs: A'propos, Coolturalna Montownia and Papug Pub. Larger entertainment events go to the Aqua-Zdrój Sports and Entertainment Hall.
The choice of venue changes the character of the evening. The philharmonic is a concert hall, clubs mean closer contact with the performer, and the event hall means bigger events for a wider audience. When you buy a ticket, check the venue name and the hour; you will find the programme details in the music category.
A separate proposal is the Stara Kopalnia Science and Art Centre, which occupies the grounds of the former Julia coal mine. It is a revitalised post-mining complex with an industrial museum, a ceramics studio and a contemporary art gallery, and it appears in the calendar as an events venue. So you can tour the mine and stay for a concert or a play.
Theatre is represented in the calendar by the Puppet and Actor Theatre in Wałbrzych, a puppet stage worth checking when you look for a show for children. Cabaret comes to, among others, Stara Kopalnia. You can check the current list of shows across the region in the cabaret category, and plays in the theatre category.
Film screenings take place at Kino Apollo. In the calendar you will see it under its own name as a separate venue. Listings from other towns of the region are in the cinema category.
The main goal is Książ, the third largest castle in Poland, located in the Wałbrzych district of Książ. It is a good reason to arrive in Wałbrzych a few hours before an evening concert or play, so that the trip is not only about the event itself.
Its history goes back more than seven hundred years, and tunnels from the time of the Second World War run beneath the castle. Next to it stands Old Książ, an artificial ruin rebuilt at the end of the eighteenth century as a scenic element for the castle.
By the castle there is also the Palm House, a historic winter garden from the early twentieth century, with walls of volcanic tuff from Etna and an exhibition of bonsai.
If you have more time, visit a park or a hill. Rusinowa Park has outdoor sculptures and two ponds, the Góra Parkowa viewpoint looks over Stary Zdrój and the towers of Książ castle, and Castle Hill has the ruins of the medieval Nowy Dwór castle at the top and rises more than six hundred metres above sea level.
For those who like trails, the area also has Fox Rock and Ptasia Kopa, peaks with traces of old mining. The full set of places is on the page for attractions in Wałbrzych. The town also has a Mausoleum, a partly ruined cenotaph of fallen Silesians now covered by rescue works, which we treat as a place of remembrance and not as a viewpoint.
For families the best address on a cloudy day is ExploraPark, an indoor centre of learning through play with interactive zones on physics, sound and renewable energy. Children learn here through play, so it is a good choice when the weather does not favour walks and parents look for something that occupies both younger and older kids.
The Stara Kopalnia mentioned above has a zone for children, and the Puppet and Actor Theatre plays for the youngest viewers. After a visit with children you can rest at Aqua Zdrój, a water park with pools, a hotel and a restaurant at the foot of Chełmiec, regarded as the largest sports facility in the Sudeten region.
Events meant for children are in the category for children. Pay attention to the audience age given in the description, because concerts and plays are sometimes aimed at different groups.
The town suits a day in which sightseeing ends with an event. Below is a sample layout that you can shorten or stretch. All the points lie within one town, so the order depends mainly on the weather, the season and the age of the group.
Stara Kopalnia has a special place here, because it joins sightseeing with the events calendar. If you tour the underground, check whether a concert or another event is held on the grounds of the post-mining complex the same evening, because then you do not need to change address.
The "Buy ticket" button next to an event leads to KupBilecik or Bilety24, where you finish the purchase. Before you pay, check the venue name and address, because Wałbrzych has several clubs and halls that are easy to confuse.
The simplest plan for the day is Książ castle or Stara Kopalnia in the morning, a rest in a park in the afternoon and a concert or screening in the evening. If you like trips outside town, look at the neighbouring towns in the main events calendar.
