Karpniki in the Rudawy Janowickie: a neo-Gothic castle with a moat, the peaks of Krzyżna Góra and Lion Hill, and a palace you cannot visit.
What can you see at Karpniki Castle?
Karpniki Castle stands at the foot of Krzyżna Góra. It was probably built in the 14th century on an artificial island ringed by a moat, extended by Kasper Schoff-Gotsch in 1475, and in the mid-19th century the architect Friedrich August Stüler gave it its neo-Gothic look. Today it is a historic hotel.
How do you climb Krzyżna Góra?
Krzyżna Góra is 654 m high and belongs to the Falcon Mountains (Góry Sokole). Just below the summit you find the remains of Sokolec Castle, 120 steps cut into the rock and a cast-iron cross from 1830. The slopes are covered with Karkonosze granite outcrops, including Bukowa Skała and Grzęda, and the Szwajcarka mountain hut stands between the peak and the village. Entry is free.
Lion Hill (Lwia Góra) reaches 718 m in the Strużnica Mountains. The nearest sight is Bolczów Castle, and keen hikers can continue to the Skalnik peak.
Can you visit the Oak Palace?
No. The Oak Palace (Pałac Dębowy) from 1875 stands outside the village at the foot of the Falcon Mountains, in a park, but it is a private estate closed to visitors.
Further into the mountains you reach Karpacz, Szklarska Poręba, Kowary, Piechowice and Przesieka.
