Things to do in Boguszów-Gorce: Wałbrzych Mountains peaks, a viewing platform and a former mine shaft. See what to pick for your day.
Which peaks can you climb in Boguszów-Gorce?
The highest is Dzikowiec, a summit of 836 m above sea level in the Stone Mountains, about 3.4 km south of the town centre. It lies within the Wałbrzych Mountains Landscape Park, and its reddish rock is melaphyre and porphyry of volcanic origin. A viewing tower stands at the top, and the area serves winter sports, aviation and mountain biking. The summit has a prominence of 153 m, so the climb from the valley is noticeable.
The Chełmiec Massif offers several lower hills. Mniszek has two summits, 704 and 710 metres, and a former quarry that now holds a climbing wall. A restaurant opened on top in 1901 with a nineteen-metre viewing tower, but those buildings are gone. Kopisko reaches 688 metres and is mostly covered by mixed forest. A stone Bismarck tower built there in 1902 was blown up in 1947.
Where is the best view in Boguszów-Gorce?
The easiest panorama is from the viewing platform on Paluch. On prewar maps the hill carried the German name Finger-Berg, hence today's Paluch. The wooden platform stands at 706 metres and is managed by the municipality. You reach it on the green trail from Boguszów-Gorce towards Chełmiec, which passes the sixth station of the Miners' Way of the Cross. From the platform you see the Black Mountains with their highest peak, Borowa, and by the way down there is a shelter with room to rest.
What can you see in town when it rains?
Start with the Witold shaft on Traugutta Street. It is a former hard coal mine, where the shaft reached 586 metres and extraction lasted until 1993. Today the listed headframe building works as a cultural centre with a library, a memorial room and a viewing tower. In the memorial room you can see mining equipment, photographs and miners' uniforms. The shaft carries the tags Rainy day and Solo, so it also makes a good goal for a solo afternoon.
The churches come next. The Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in the Gorce district was built in 1928-1929 to a design by Karl Fromm. St Barbara's Church from 1927 is a brick building with a bulbous helmet roof on its tower and relics of Sister Faustyna Kowalska. The third building, a former Protestant church, is now a private ruin and not suitable for visits.
What else to plan and where to go next?
If you want something active, the Eskapada riding school takes beginners and more experienced riders, with classes in summer and winter. The school sits on Poniatowskiego Street and welcomes both children and adults. Confirm the range of lessons and the price list before you arrive.
