Things to do in Strzegom: a Gothic basilica, a peak of the Crown of the Polish Sudetes, a local museum room and a play centre. Here is the best order.

What should you see first in Strzegom?

Start with the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. It is a Gothic church raised in stages from the 14th to the 16th century, built of stone, unlike many brick churches of the region. It first belonged to the Knights Hospitaller, and today it is a minor basilica and a collegiate church listed as a Polish Historic Monument. A few hundred metres away stands St Hedwig church, a small Gothic building mentioned since 1372 as a hospital chapel. It was rebuilt in 1460, and since 1819 it has served as a funeral chapel, because a new town cemetery was laid out around it.

Close to the basilica you find the Strzegom Land Tradition Room in a former Carmelite monastery building from the 17th century. It operates at the Karmel Social Activity Centre as part of the Strzegom Culture Centre. Available sources give neither the address nor opening hours, so call or ask the culture centre before you go.

Where do you go with children or for a longer walk?

Leśna Kraina is a play centre for children up to 12 at Kościuszki 10B, open since 2 December 2014. It has two rooms: one with a two-level Monkey Grove structure with slides and a ball pit, the other with educational toys and a zone for the youngest. It also organises birthdays and creative workshops.

For peak lovers there is Góra Krzyżowa, the highest point of the Strzegom Hills at 358 m above sea level, northwest of the town. The peak belongs to the Crown of the Polish Sudetes and the area is a protected landscape area.

How do you plan a day?

In the morning see the basilica and the tradition room, at midday drop into the library, and in the afternoon head towards Góra Krzyżowa. The E. Orzeszkowa Public Library of the Town and Commune of Strzegom is based on Świdnicka Street, has branches in six villages of the commune and a digital archive of local chronicles. If you prefer to explore alone, see Strzegom Solo. In the area also check attractions in Świdnica and in Świebodzice.
