Międzylesie offers a castle dating from 1370, a Baroque column and two Bystrzyckie Mountains peaks. See how to plan a visit to the town.

What to see in the centre of Międzylesie?

Międzylesie Castle stands on Plac Wolności (Freedom Square) and can be visited with a guide. It is a complex of three wings: a medieval-Renaissance castle wing and two Baroque palace wings. The first defensive building went up here in 1370 as the seat of the Glaubitz family and was destroyed during the Hussite wars. The present layout is the result of rebuilding between the 14th and 17th centuries.

Next to the castle you will find the Marian Column, a late Baroque freestanding votive column honouring the Virgin Mary, decorated with figures of saints. You view it from the street, free of charge. A few steps further stands the Church of St John Paul II, a former Protestant church from 1899-1900 designed by building councillor Kruttge of Kłodzko, in a style mixing Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic elements. After years of devastation it was rebuilt and in 2011 consecrated as a filial church of the Corpus Christi parish.

Which mountain to choose for a walk?

Bochniak, also called Działek, is 713 m above sea level and lies about 2 kilometres south-west of town. It has a domed shape and gentle slopes, and spruce forest of the lower montane zone covers the whole hill. On the slope you will see a stone cross from 1628 and a small chapel from around 1800. The summit carries the "Great views" and "Solo" tags.

Żeleźnia is lower at 597 m, but more interesting for those who like traces of old industry: the slopes hold the ruins of a lime kiln and the marks of a former quarry. A wide mountain meadow covers the western slopes, and the northern slope is just as gentle.

How to combine Międzylesie with the area?

Start with the castle, then pick one peak so the day does not get too long. Kłodzko, Kudowa-Zdrój, Nowa Ruda, Lądek-Zdrój and Stronie Śląskie lie nearby, each with its own list of places.
