Polkowice is a copper town: working KGHM mines that you cannot tour like a museum, plus a play centre and a library for rainy days.

What do we know about the copper mines near Polkowice?

Both mines are working industrial plants, not tourist sights. The Rudna Mining Plant lies north of the town and is regarded as the largest copper ore mine in Europe. It started on 17 July 1974 and has 11 shafts from 900 to 1,244 metres deep. The Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine was formed in 1996 by merging the Polkowice mine, opened in 1968, and the Sieroszowice mine, opened in 1980. Treat them as part of the local landscape and industrial history, not as places to tour.

Where to take a child in Polkowice when it rains?

The Szalejkowo play room at ulica Wojska Polskiego 17A has colourful ball pits, slides and creative play zones. It also organises birthdays, with face painting and balloon modelling. Check the hours and booking by phone or on social media before you go.

Where can you wait out the rain quietly?

The Town and Municipality Public Library at ulica Skalników 6 has worked without a break since 1949 and serves both the town and nearby villages. An online catalogue on the SOWA system lets you browse the collection before a visit, and interlibrary loans bring in books from other libraries.

In the municipality lies the village of Jakubów, with the Buczyna Jakubowska reserve and a historic manor.
