a play centre in a castle setting with birthday parties, balls and puppet shows for children

Things to do in Oława: the Sobieski castle, a motor museum, thermal pools and play centres. See where to start your day.

What to see in Oława if you like museums and monuments

Start with the WENA Motoring Museum, a private museum with hundreds of vehicles, from classics to modern models. Besides cars you will see aircraft, motorcycles, bicycles and tractors, as well as themed exhibitions from the communist era. The vehicles stand so that you can look at them up close, from every side. The museum carries the "Rainy day", "For families" and "For couples" tags.

The historic core of the town is the Sobieski Castle on Plac Zamkowy. This Renaissance and Baroque castle was built from the 16th to the 17th century on the site of a Gothic hunting lodge of Duke Louis I from the late 14th century. Renaissance work began in 1541 under Master Jakub of Milan, and from 1588 it was continued by Bernard Niuron. Today the castle houses the Town Hall, so you mostly see it from outside. In Nowy Otok see the postmodern church, consecrated on 22 August 2007. It was not parochial from the start: it first worked as a private chapel dedicated to Our Lady Queen of the Universe of Divine Peace and was a meeting place for followers of the visionary Kazimierz Domański. In 1999-2005 it belonged to the Holy Spirit Association in Oława. The building went up in the 1990s.

Where to spend time with children

Oława has several play centres. Edu-Point is on the third floor of Galeria Oławska and offers blocks, a slide, trampolines, tunnel mazes and interactive educational stations. Zamkowa Kraina has a castle-style interior and organises birthdays, balls and puppet shows. BabyBoom at 3 Maja 2 has an air-conditioned space and a cafe for parents. For older kids there is Jump 4U, a trampoline park in the PBS Mrówka hall with over 1,000 m² of jumping zones, a Monkey Grove and an inflatable 30-metre Ninja Track.

What about swimming and sport?

Termy Jakuba is a complex with an indoor sports pool of six 25-metre lanes, a recreation pool, a paddling pool, a jacuzzi and a water slide. The outdoor part covers over 1,300 square metres and has a water playground. There is also a sauna area with steam, dry and bio saunas. The complex has sports halls for hire and pitches, and a dry playground for children. You can borrow books at the library at 1 Maja 24: fiction for adults and teenagers from 13, school reading lists and popular science. It is a branch of the County and Town Public Library, whose main seat is at Rynek 1. On 11 Listopada Street, near the castle, there is also a shooting range, but only people with a certificate of fitness to handle firearms may enter.

How to plan a day in Oława

When it rains, open the page Oława in the rain. With kids use the list For children, and for a trip on your own pick solo places. A family with kids will pick the pools and play centres, a couple the castle, the museum and a stroll around Plac Zamkowy, and a solo traveller the museum and the library. Nearby lie Jelcz-Laskowice, Bystrzyca and Gać.
