Regional Museum in Syców
Syców

a regional museum in the eighteenth-century former seat of the local court, with a document from before 1377 in its collection

Things to do in Syców: a museum in an 18th-century townhouse, a Jewish cemetery memorial site and a library with a children's club.

What does the Regional Museum in Syców show?

The Regional Museum works inside the Cultural Centre, in an 18th-century townhouse that once housed the municipal court. Its collections include documents on the history of the town and region, the oldest dating from 1377, plus coins, seals, maps, prints, engravings and old newspapers. There are also archaeological and ethnographic collections. A separate part of the display tells of the town's former owners, the Biron von Curland family. It is a good plan for a rainy day.

Where is the Jewish cemetery in Syców?

The Jewish cemetery covered 0.19 hectares. It was founded in the 17th century and used until the end of the 18th century; after burials resumed, the first funeral took place on 4 September 1820. In 1871 the site was enclosed by a brick wall. After the Second World War the cemetery was destroyed and no gravestone survives. Since 2014 a plaque has commemorated it. Today it is a place of remembrance, and entry is free.

Is there something for readers and children?

The Mikołaj Rej Public Library is at 3a Kościelna Street and operates within the Cultural Centre. It has a collection to borrow on site and an online catalogue. For the youngest it runs the Książkowy Klub Zaczarowanych Bąbelków reading club, meant for children who come with parents or carers.
